Start!

 

그녀는 올해로 21살이 되었다.

 

어렸을 때부터 '착한 아이'였던 그녀는 비틀어지기 시작했다. 어머니의 곁을 떠나려하지 않던 아이는 언제부터인가 당신을 제 가슴에서 밀어내었다. 가슴에서 밀려난 당신의 위치는 한없이 아래로 추락했다. 더이상 당신은 그녀의 어머니도 아니었고 그 무엇도 아니었다. 그렇게 처음이 비틀어졌다. 왜 자신이 당신을 미워하게 되었는지, 언제부터 당신의 위치를 끌어내어 밑바닥으로 추락시켰는지 알 수 없다. 다만 자신은 당신을 미워했다. 그것만은 확실했다. 그 미움은 곧 가족 전체로 번져나갔다. 그녀는 자라나면서 가족을 못참아했다. 가족이란 울타리에서 벗어나길 원했고 타인이 되고 싶어했다. 후에 '죽음'이라는 형태로 바뀌면서 자살을 꿈꾸기 시작했다. 가족에서 영원히 벗어나는 것이 '죽음'뿐이라는 것을 믿어 의심치 않았다. 그녀는 항상 '죽음'을 꿈꿨다. 목을 매든, 손목을 긋든, 백합향에 취해 영원의 잠에 빠져들든, 어떻게든 죽고싶어했다. 가장 극단적인 방법으로 나타난 타인의 형태였으나 그녀는 그 것을 꿈꿨다. 그러나 용기가 없었기에 가족을 벗어나고 싶어했음에도 불구하고 아직은 곁에 머물렀다. '죽음'은 그녀가 가장 사랑하고 가장 신뢰하는 친구들을 사귀게 되면서 사라졌다. 친구들을 사귀면서 이 세상에 미련이 남았다. 당장 죽어서는 안되겠다고 생각했다. 다시 우유부단하고 밝은 아이로 돌아가 '삶'을 원하게 되었다. 죽음은 가슴 가장 밑바닥에 스며들어 잠에 빠져들었다. 그녀가 다시 원하는 날이 올 때까지. 그녀는 그들과의 만남에서 소소한 행복과 가족에서는 느낄 수 없는 특별한 무언가를 느꼈다. 그것은 '집착'으로 변해 그들과의 관계의 신뢰가 무너지는 것에 민감해졌다. 스스로 밀어내던 때와는 다르게 그들을 받아들였다. 3년 반이란 세월동안, 그들에게 '진짜 자신의 마음'을 준 적은 없지만 그들을 가족보다도 신뢰하고 좋아했다.

 

어느 날 사건이 터졌다.  

 

그들 중 하나가 그녀를 배신한 것이다. 웃는 얼굴과 순진한 얼굴로 아무것도 모르는 척 가면을 쓴 채 그녀를 잘근잘근 밟아왔다. 그 사실을 알았을 때, 그녀는 신뢰를 잃었다. 모함과 거짓증거로 그녀를 무너뜨리는 동안 그녀는 자신도 모르게 그것들을 기정사실로 만들어버렸다. 그녀는 이제 아무것도 상관없었다. 더이상 좋아할 것도 없었고 집착해야할 것들-집착하고 싶어했던 것들-을 모두 제 가슴에서 밀어내고 곁에서 밀어내었다. 다시 '혼자'가 된다는 사실을 알았다. 그래도 상관없었다. 차라리 혼자가 나았다. '혼자'서는 외로워도 또다시 상처받을 일은 없으니까. 당신은 그런 그녀를 조롱하진 않았지만 여러가지 것에서 부딪쳐왔다. 은연 중에 '네까짓게 뭘할줄 알겠어?'라면서 자존심을 건드렸다. 그녀는 '착한 아이'였던 때로 돌아간 것처럼 아무 말도 하지 않았지만 당신을 증오했다. 빨리 죽어버리라고 자신의 눈앞에서 사라져버리라고 시체가 되어 썩어문드러지라고 해서는 안될 저주를 퍼부었다. 저주를 퍼붓고 증오를 분출하는 순간동안 그녀는 타인이 되었다. 그러면서 증오와 미움은 더더욱 커져갔다. 광기도 거세졌다. 미쳐갔다. 원래부터 미쳐있던 지도 모른다. 그렇게 당신을 증오하고 가족을 못참아했는지 모른다. 타인에게 제자신의 마음을 주기 싫어했는지도 모른다. 분노하는 순간만큼은 그녀는 타인이 되었다.  

 

버스에 오르면서 그녀는 생각했다. 자신이 왜그렇게 당신의 말에 상처받고 저주를 퍼부었는지 알게 되었다. 자신은 패배자라는 생각. 자존심이 강하던 시절은 사라지고 패배감이 남았다. '어째서?' 역시 언제부터 어떻게 형성된 건지 알 수 없다. 그 시절의 그녀는 승리에 대한 욕심이 강했다. 누군가에게 지는 것을 싫어했고 져도 왜 졌는가에 대해 변명하기를 싫어했다. 어느순간 그런 자존심과 승부욕은 사라지고 패배감만이 남아 마음을 짓눌렀다. 할퀴고 짓이기고 갈기갈기 조각내고. 그 짙은 패배감이 짓눌러오는 무게에 그녀는 자신도 모르게 신음을 흘렸다. 눈물이 차오르던 눈에 독기가 돌았다. 마지막이다. 무언가를 보여주자. 이젠 그런 패배감도 무시도 느끼기 싫었다. 더구나 당신의 그 네까짓게 뭘 할 수 있겠느냐는 말이 듣기 싫었다. 당신이 이기나 내가 이기나해보자. 21년이란 세월의 반이 허무함과 공허함으로 채워졌다면, 이젠 포만감으로 채울 차례다. 그녀는 더이상 패배감에 짓눌릴 수만은 없었다. 이제는 그것들을 제 자신에게 몰아낼 차례다. 늦었다고 생각했을 때가 가장 빠른 때라고 인생은 아직 길다. 그것들을 몰아내기에 시간은 많았다.

 

 

버스에서 문득 생각난 소재랄까.

 

'그녀'와 어째선지 동질감을 느껴버렸다.

 

여기에서 좀 더 이어나가야하지만, 그러다간 끝도 없이

길어질 것 같으니 이쯤에서 Cut.

아직 카스티엘의 이미지가 확립...되지않을 적이라고 보기엔 무리가 있지만,

여튼 그가 처음 등장해서 몇 컷 나오지 않았을 때에 쓴 것으로 보인다.

어떤 블로거가 쓴 팬픽이었는데 그 소설에서 카스티엘의 이미지는 완전히 엇나가 있었다.

천사인데 악마처럼 심하게 군다거나 그런건 아니다.

 

단지 그 몇 컷되지않는 씬만으로도 유추해낼 수 있는 그의 성격을 완벽히 뒤틀어놓았다는거다.

카스티엘은 말수가 적고 진지하다. 자신을 드러내는 일이 거의 없다.

가끔 협박을 하는 일은 있지만, 기껏해야 전 시즌 통틀어도 그 수가 적다.

고민하는 일이 많고 인간의 감정때문에 혼란스러워하는 때가 있다.

 

이런 단편적인 그의 이미지만으로도 그가 어떤 천사인지 알 수 있다.

그런데 그 블로거의 소설에서 카스티엘은 심한 잘난척대마왕인데다가,

자신을 드러내고, 말수는 적고 진지하다.

그런데 근원적으로 어딘가 몹시 가볍다. 그렇다고 헬렐레펠렐레하는건 아니다.

무거운 캐릭터가 단번에 반으로 잘려나간 느낌이랄까.

 

페러렐월드라던가, 크로스오버라던가 리메이크물, 그런 것도 아니다.

그냥 슈퍼내추럴 본연의 이야기를 팬픽으로 쓴건데 읽고서 뭐냐 이건 했다.

뭐 팬픽이야 자기가 좋아서 애정으로 쓰는 거라지만

그는 캐릭터의 본래 성격까지 망쳐놓아서 거슬렸다.

카스티엘이 제일 안할법한 대사도 그의 소설에서는 거리낌없이 내뱉었다.

제발 이런 소설들은 없었으면 좋겠다.

재미가 있다면 몰라도-아니 재미가 있어도 그런 글을 사절이지만- 그 블로거는 정말 글을 못쓴다.

이제 글 처음 쓰기 시작한건 아닌 모양인데 묘사도 그럭저럭, 분량도 그럭저럭이지만 재미없다.

 

카스티엘이 "난 잘났으니까 네가 못하는건 다 해낼 수 있다."이런 류의 대사를 내뱉다니

정-----말------이지 너무나도 거슬려서 읽다가 익스플로러 창을 꺼버렸다.

캐릭터 본연의 성격을 망치면서 묘사하는 글을 사절이다.

캐릭터를 잘 모르면 연구해보고 쓰면 된다.

그런것도없이 무작정 아무렇게 휘갈겨버리니 망작이니 졸작이니,

재미없고 거슬리는 글이 나와버리는 거다.

Start!

 

다소 짙은 물빛은 크레파스의 그 것과도 같다.

뛰어내리면 젤리처럼 폭- 빠져버리는건 아닐까, 실없는 생각을 한다. 입꼬리가 말아 올라간다. 가벼운 미소를 지은 것과는 달리 미간은 잔뜩 찌푸려진채다. 기묘한 표정이다. 화내는 것도 웃는것도 아니다. 아래를 내려다본다. 수면 위로 비춰지는 것은 다리의 잿빛 잔상이다. 제 자신의 모습도 비춰지지만 짙은 물빛에 그 모습이 흐리다. 그 것이 마음에 들지 않는지 입을 삐죽인다. 그러다가 또 씨익 웃는다. 이대로 몸을 던진다면 분명 죽는다, 라는 것을 알고 있다. 먼저 폐 속 가득히 비린 물이 채워지고 그대로 숨이 막혀 익사할터다. 죽음의 과정이 고통스럽던 말던 상관없었다. 필요한 것은 오로지 죽음이다. 공허함만이 가득찬 머리와 산 채로 썩어가는 몸따위 필요없다. 원하는 것은 살아있는 죽음과 마지막의 안식이다. 비틀어져버린 인생의 종지부를 여기서 찍자고 그렇게 다짐한다. 살아서 바뀌는 것은 아무것도 없다. 자신은 혼자고, 영원히 혼자일 것이고, 삶에대한 의미를 잃어버린 무기질의 인형일 뿐이니까. 한 쪽 다리를 앞으로 내디뎌본다. 차디찬 공기와 살갗이 맞닿는다. 차갑지만 공기의 느낌은 부드럽다. 서늘한 바람이 몸을 휘감는다. 그 오슬한 느낌에 몸을 맡기고 미련없이 몸을 앞으로 뻗는다. 머리가 아래로 쑥 내밀린다. 거꾸러진 몸이,  찬찬히 추락한다. 수면으로 내던져진다. 눈을 뜨지않고도 알 수 있다. 곧 수면 위로 추락해버리리라는 것을. 누군가 그녀의 팔을 잡아채었다. 강한 힘이다. 안돼! 나는 죽어야한단 말이야! 소리없는 비명과 저항이 자신의 팔을 움켜진 상대를 향한다. 그녀가 물 속으로 빠지며 본 것은 물빛과는 다른 맑은 푸른빛이다.

찢어지고 찢겨져 너덜너덜해진 마음은 채꿰멜 수도 없는 상태였다.

온전히 자리하고 있는 것은 아무것도 없다. 아무도 없었고 '정상'을 유지하는 것은 없었다. 그 어떤 것도 온전하지 못했다. 뒤틀리고 비틀어진 자신을 추스릴 수조차 없이 찾아온 것은 죽음이다. 부모의 죽음이 먼저였고 두 번째는 동생, 세 번째는 제 자신의 죽음이었다. 육체적인 죽음은 자신에게 해당사항이 없었다. 영혼의 찢겨짐. 갈기갈기 찢겨진 영혼의 조각은 주울 수도 없다. 그것은 완벽한 죽음이었고 삶을 잃어버리는 무언의 신호다. 부모를 잃고 형제를 잃고 자신을 잃어버린 뒤 남는 것은 공허다. 지독히도 낮게, 밑바닥부터 깔려있던 공허와 어둠이 스멀스멀 기어올라와 제 자신을 좀먹었다. 산 채로 썩어간다는 것은 바로 그런것이리라. 치유할 수 없는 상처로 점철된 마음과 아무것도 할 수 있을리 없는 육체는 나날이 약해졌다. 아프다. 고통스럽다. 역겹다. 지독하다. 쓰다. 쓰라리다. 모든 감정마저도 좀먹는 어둠이다. 입으로 뱉을 수 없는, 목까지 차오른 고통의 신음을 참는다. 그 뒤에 남는 것은 허무다. 허무를 따라 공포와 두려움이 몸을 갉아먹는다. 어쩔 수 없이 한 숨을 내쉬어 그것들을 몰아낸다. 채 몰아내지 못한 것들이 밑바닥으로 가라앉는다. 앙금처럼 가라앉아 이따금씩 또다시 영혼의 조각을 우적우적 씹어먹는 것들이다. 먹혀버린 조각들은 소생할 길이 없다. 처음부터 존재하지 않았던 것처럼 그저 없다. 아파하지도 못하는 자신은 무미건조하게 울 뿐이다. 가끔씩은 그 울음마저도 허무하고 공허해서 병신처럼 마냥 있었다. 밀랍인형처럼 움직이지도 못한채. 어둠만이 남은 그 곳에 널부러져 시체처럼. 빼빼마른 육체는 더더욱 말라가고 죽은 영혼은 한 줌의 재가되어 사라진다. 바스락거리는 그 느낌마저도 사라져 허공으로 흩어진다. 없다. 아무것도 없다. 남겨진 것은 산채로 썩어가는 육체뿐이고 진정 남은 것은 없다. 이제 제대로 된 것은 존재하지 않는다. 죽어가는 자신만이 남아 무료하게 썩어갈 따름이다.

건조한 시선으로 바라본다. 무엇을 바라보는지도 구분할 수 없다. 보고 있는 것은 그저 맑은 푸른빛이고 그것은 다만 존재하고 있었다. 무엇인지도 모른채 바라보고있다. 손을 뻗어도 닿지않는 것은 그냥 있다. 어른어른거리는 잔상만이 남아있는 그것은 그냥 거기에 있었다. 눈을 감는다. 두어번 깜빡인다. 더럽고 비릿한 물이 위를 타고 목을 타고 역류한다. 그것들을 토해낸다. 짜고 쓴 맛이 혀끝을 맴돈다. 계속해서 그것을 토해내고 나니 정신이 말짱해진다. 목이 아리다. 흐렸던 시선이 돌아온다. 기침을 토해낸다. 누군가 차가워진 손을 부드럽게 잡아온다. 또렷한 시선으로 보인 것은 한 남자다. 눈동자가 짙은 푸른 빛으로 빛나는. 의아한 시선에도 남자의 표정은 없다. 감정이 비치지않는 차가운 얼굴이다. 그런 시선이다. 남자는 그저 괜찮다-,고만 할 뿐이다. 낮은 중저음의 목소리가 기분좋게 울린다. 파랗게 질린 입술과 창백한 피부가 하얗게 빛났다. 부르르 떨리는 입술이 숨을 뱉는다. 차다. 시체같은 몸을 남자는 말없이 부축해 품에 안는다. 마주한 시선에 한동안 말이 없다.

난해하다.

 

대강 이런 느낌으로 쓸 거 같다.

간단하게 글의 분위기나 적어보자고 생각했다.

말그대로 스케치다.

 

큰 글의 퍼즐조각일 뿐으로 본편은 아니다.

 

정말 난해한데,

좀 더 정리하고 다듬으면 나을까?

 

 

[ Dogma ] 아즈라엘

 

영화 도그마에 등장하는 '아즈라엘'에 대해서 짧막하게 얘기해보련다.

 

[찾아낸게 요딴 이미지라 그저 미안할 따름이다. 좋아하는 캐릭터인데(...)]

 

 

아즈라엘이라고하면 스펠링은 Azrael, 이슬람교에 등장하는 '죽음의 천사'로

알려진 그의 이름은 만화 캐릭터의 이름으로도 자주 쓰였다.

스머프에 등장하는 가가멜이 데리고 다니는 고양이의 이름도 아즈라엘이고,

건담시드에 등장하는 악당의 이름도 아즈라엘이다.

그 밖에 그의 이름을 가진 캐릭터는 많다.

 

도그마에서 아즈라엘은 죽음의 천사가 아닌 무형의 존재, 즉 뮤즈로 그려졌다.

그리스로마에 등장하는 뮤즈가 왜 기독교 교리를 바탕에 둔 영화에 등장하는지

이해할 수 없었는데, 그냥 이름만 빌려왔지 싶다.

종교관련 블랙코미디 영화니까 천사만큼은 100% 종교적인 레퍼토리를 안따라간건지도 모른다.

정해둔 설정이야 작가와 감독만이 알겠지만. 내가 볼 땐 그렇다는거다.

 

여기에 등장하는 아즈라엘은 그가 본래 하던 일도 성격도 배경도 완전히 다르다.

도그마에서 그는 루시퍼가 반란을 일으켰을 때 하나님의 편에도, 루시퍼의 편에도 서지 않았다.

그저 누가 이기는지만 지켜보며 중립을 지켰다.

중립을 지키는 것이 나쁜일은 아니지만 흑백논리만 적용되는 천국에서는 용납되지 못할 일이고,

'누가 이기는지 지켜보았으니' 그것이 죄가 되어 천국에서 쫓겨나 지옥으로 떨어졌다.

그 후 지옥에서 탈출한 아즈라엘은 바틀비와 로키를 이용해 지구가 '無'로 돌아가도록

뒤에서 모습을 숨긴채 조종했다.

지옥이라는 혐오스러운 곳에서 썩을 바에야 세상을 없애고 자신고 없애버리고자 한 것이다.

무모하면서도 무서운 계획이지만, 베서니에의해 실패한다.

 

그는 도그마에서 이기적이고 교만한 존재로 그려졌다.

이기적이라함은, 제 자신의 안위만을 위해 행동한 것이고

교만이라함은, 악마니까 죽지않으니 마음대로 공격해라고 한 것이다.

물론 그는 그 교만때문에 신의 물건-교황의 골프채-에 맞아 죽는다(..)

 

도그마에서 아즈라엘이 '죽음의 천사'로서의 제 역활을 했다면 어땠을까.

아마도 로키와의 역활이 바뀌고 바틀비와 함께 행동하는건 로키가 아니라

그가 되었을지도 모르는 일이다.

 

천사로서의 본래 설정을 따라가지 않은 것이 조금은 아쉽지만,

영화설정이야 있던 사실을 왜곡하고 상상을 덧입히는 것이니

이런 식의 설정과 캐릭터의 확립도 나쁘지 않다고 생각한다.

 

 

+ ) 아즈라엘을 연기한 제이슨 리는 '내 이름은 얼' 드라마의 주인공인 얼을 연기한 배우이다.

물론 본인은 수염과 벗겨진듯한(..) 헤어스타일때문에 그인지 전혀 못알아봤다.

 

우마서먼

 

우마서먼이라는 배우는 킬빌을 통해서 알게되었다.

 

사람들은 그녀가 전형적인 미국 미인이라 말했다.

(미국의 전형적인 미인 기준은 금발에 파란눈이다)

난 그녀가 어디가 예쁜지 이해하지 못했다.

아니 이해할 수 없었달까.

 

솔직히 그녀가 예쁘다거나 아름답다고는 느끼지 못했다.

 

난 그녀를 보며 정말 평범하다고 생각했고,

외적으로 보이는 아름다움과는 거리가 멀다고 생각했다.

 

킬빌에 등장하는내내 화장끼없는 얼굴로 복수를 해대는 탓에

그런건지도 모르고, 단지 내가 선호하는 미의 기준에 들지 못해서

그랬는지도 모른다.

 

 

그런데 그녀의 사진을 보고 반해버렸다. 정말 '여신이다-'라는 느낌.

킬빌의 영향탓인지 뭔지 그녀에게선 독하고 시크한 느낌이 든다.

말하자면 팜므파탈, 나쁜여자(Badwoman)다.

 

하지만 그녀는 정말 다양한 캐릭터를 가지고 있다.

사랑스러움, 팜므파탈, 독함, 시크함, 차가움, 자연스러움 등등

그녀가 가진 모습은 카멜레온만큼이나 다양하다.

그녀는 다양한 장르의 영화에서 다양한 캐릭터와 연기를 보여주어 여러번 변신을 해왔다.

그때문에 더욱 매력을 느꼈는지도 모른다.

 

나는 그녀가 좋다.

여배우로서 그녀가 보여주는 다양함이 좋다.

 

'퍼시잭슨과 번개도둑'에서 메두사로 변신한 모습이 가장 최근 본 모습이다.

그녀가 어떤 영화에서 또 어떤 면을 보여줄지 기대된다.

 

그녀가 '바론의 대모험'에도 출연했다고 했는데,

킬빌보다 먼저 본 영화인데도 왜 그녀를 보지 못했는지 모르겠다.

너무 오래된 영화라 그런걸까.

아니면 그때도 그녀는 나의 관심밖이었던 걸까.

 

아무래도 전자보단 후자겠지.

아까전에 한번 날려먹고 다시 적는(...젠장!)

이 토막글에서 좀 더 이어진다. 날려먹었는데 기억안나서 캐안습이다.

   

"I Want to Believe"는 전부터 구상해두었던 연작인데

어떻게될지 모르겠다.

 

스토리를 간단히 얘기하자면,

자신을 천사라고 믿는 남자와 항상 죽고싶어하는 소녀가

한 사건을 계기로 만나 같이 지내면서 서로를 변화시킨다는 이야기.

 

일종의 성장소설 축에 들어갈 것 같다.

.....지만 사실은 성장소설의 가면을 쓴 현대판타지물<--

I Want to Believe 연작 이후의 내용은 미래이야기인데

상당히 스케일이 커서 설정으로만 남겨둘지 아니면 쓸건지는 미정.

 

옴니버스식 진행이고 시간대도 왔다갔다할 예정이다.

1년 전으로 갔다가 갑자기 2년후로 가고 다시 현재로 되돌아오는 식으로 말이다.

줄거리

 천국의 계율을 어겨 지상으로 유배당한 두 명의 추락천사, 로키와 바틀비 이들은 못된 짓만 일삼으며 인간 세상을 헤집고 다닌다. 천국으로 돌아가는 계획에 차질이 생기자 급기야 타락하기 시작한다. 예수님의 '마지막 후손' 베서니, 어느 날 밤 기도 중이던 그녀 앞에 천국의 대변인 격인 메타트론이 나타나 그녀만이 두 추락천사를 선도해 인류를 구원할 사람이라고 전한다. 그런 동안 나이가 2000살이나 된 자칭 예수의 13번째 제자라고 말하는 건달 사도(예수님이 흑인?) 루퍼스를 비롯, 지옥으로 떨어졌던 성미 급한 악마 아즈라엘, 천상의 뮤즈 세런디피티, 얼간이 예언자들 제이 & 사일런트 밥을 만나게 되고 마침내는 각자 내면에 간직하고 있던 신앙심의 본질을 깨닫는데.

 

 

나는 단 한번 케빈 스미스의 영화를 본 적이 없었다.

'도그마'가 개봉된 1999년에 나는 겨우 9살이었기 때문이다.

때문에 그런 감독이 있는 줄도 몰랐고 이런 영화가 있는 줄도 몰랐다.

이 영화를 본 건 9년이 흐른 2008년이었다.

아주 우연한 계기로 보았다고 말할 수 있다.

영화가 시작되기 전, 크레딧에 떠오르는 '거부성명'.

감독은 '도그마'를 종교영화가 아닌 코믹판타지이므로 심각하게 받아들이지 말라고 했으나,

영화는 개봉되자마자 신성모독이라며 비판을 받아야했다.

그 신성모독이라 지껄이는 자들은 모두 그 자체가 이단이니 그런 개소리는 가볍게

무시해주는 것이 상책이다.

다만, 기독교 단체가 아니라 디즈니쪽에서 반발을 일으킨게 의문이지만.

 

의외로 정통교리에 충실한 영화는 감독 특유의 것이라 여겨지는 가벼운 수다로 시작된다.

정통교리를 무너뜨리지 않는 선에서, 그리고 신을 믿으면 천국에 갈 수 있다는 중세적인 교리를

그대로 따르면서 영화를 진행시킨다.

 

조금은 진부하게 느껴질지도 모르는 이야기(구원, 종말)를 코믹하게 해석했다는 점이 흥미롭다.

 

'도그마'는 종교에 대한 비판과 풍자를 늘어놓지 않는다.

영화의 주제의식이란 것이 너무나도, -아까도 언급했듯이- 기독교 정통교리에 충실하기 때문에

오히려 신에 대한 믿음과 열망으로 가득하다.

신성모독이니 이단이니 뭐라고 지껄여도 이 영화를 잘 까놓고 보면 신성모독이 아니라는거다.

 

신이 여자라는 것, 13번째 제자가 있었다는 것, 예수가 흑인이라는 것 등등

영화에 등장하는 이야기가 조금은 파격적인 류의 것이지만 그것들은 단지 부수적인 것에

불과할 뿐이다. 곁다리에 불과한 것들은 주제의식을 더욱 부각시켜준다.

예수가 흑인이라는 가설은 예전에 보았던 다큐멘터리를 통해서 알고 있었지만,

나머지 것들은 다소 충격적이었다.

천사들도 그 때 당시에 내가 믿고있던 천사의 이미지랑 확연히 달랐다.

나는 정말 그때까지만해도 천사는 하얀 날개를 달고 후광이 보이는, 착한 존재라고 알고있었다.

또한 그들이 굉장히 순수하고 우아한 존재들이라고 믿고있었다.

'도그마'에 등장하는 천사들은 착하지 않다.

죄에 대해 무자비하고, '살인'으로서 인간을 단죄하는,

악마보다도 더하면 더했지 덜하지않은 그런 차가운 존재들이다.

살인으로서 단죄하는 것을 내기하고, 즐긴다는 점 또한 충격이었다.

영화를 보면서 천사에 대한 이미지들이 만화와 영화, 소설 등을 통해서

형성된 것이라는 것을 은연중에 깨달아버렸다.

그리고 영화에 등장하는 천사의 이미지와 속성이 성경과 많이 닮아있다는 것도 알게되었다.

그 후로 성경을 처음부터 끝까지 정독했는데, 그들은 정말 착하지않다.

오죽했으면 성경에 등장하는 인물이 꿈에서 천사를 보았는데 자기가 죽을 거라고

공포에 떨었겠는가.

비록 영화에 등장하는 이들이 타락천사이긴하지만,

그들은 천국으로 올라가기전에 착한 짓 좀 해보자며 금송아지를 캐릭터화하여

상품화시킨 회사의 윗분들을 -딱 한명만 남겨놓고- 죄다 죽였다.

물론 이 이야기는 성경에 등장하는 이야기를 현대물로 재구성한 이야기다.

 

영화는 '만들어진 신'과 '존재하는 신'을 보여준다.

'만들어진 신'은 종교에 의해 만들어진 신의 이미지를,

'존재하는 신'은 있는 그대로의 신의 이미지를 보여준다.

우리가 믿어야할 것은 만들어진 신이 아니라 존재하는 신이다.

마음대로 규정짓고 이미지화시킨 신은 그 자체의 신이 아니다.

 

영화에 등장하는 베서니의 친구가 그녀에게 해준 말이 인상적이었다.

"어렸을 때는 무조건적으로 믿지만, 크면 그 믿음을 채워야하는 그릇도 커진다"라는 것.

나는 이것에서 공감을 얻었고 충격을 받았다.

나도 베서니처럼 습관처럼 교회에 가고, 교회에 다녀오면 한 주가 끝났다고 생각한다.

그래서 그녀의 행동에, 영화가 이야기를 풀어나가는 형식과 감독이 영화를 통해

말해주는 것들이 전부 와닿았는지도 모른다.

 

자신의 믿음에 회의적인 사람이라면 한 번쯤 이런 영화를 봐줘야 한다고 생각한다.

가볍게 즐길 수 있으면서도 자신을 돌아볼 수 있는 계기될테니 말이다.

치천사 세라핌 Seraphim
「 탄다」 「뱀」이라고 말하는 헤브루 어원을 가지는 세라핌은 신에게 가장 가까운 존재로 여겨진다. 고대, 이 생물은 하늘계를 비상하는 뱀으로 여겨지고 있었다. 유태교, 예수교에서는, 그들은 신과 직접 교제, 순수한 빛과 사고의 존재로서 사랑의 불길과 공명한다고 했다. ” 사랑과 상상력의 정령” 과 호칭되는 것도 이율인하 위엄, 명예에 가득 찬 천사라고 말할 수 있는 이겠다. 그들은 유태교, 크리스트교 공통의 천사가 있지만, 크리스트교로는 육장의 날개를 지녔다고 여겨진다. 그리고, 손에는 태양쿠트스 (Sanctus, 헤브루어로 새스아기온 = Trisagion「성스러운 인지인, 성스러운 인지인, 성스러운 인지인」 ) 의 가사를 새긴” 불길의 단검 (Flabellum= 성선) 인지, 혹은 기를 가지고 있다. 「· · · · · ·나는 하늘 높은곳 어좌에 주인이 자리하고 있어지는 것을 보았다. 의의 거는 신전가득 넓어지고 있었다. 상의 바로 지금은 세라핌이 있어, 각자 육장의 날개를 가지고, 두개를 가져 얼굴을 가리고, 두개를 가져 다리를 만다, 두개를 가져 날개짓 하고 있었다. 그들은 서로 부르기 교나,「성스러운, 성스러운, 성스러운 만군의 주. 주인의 영광은 땅을 모두 가린다」이 부르기 교목소리에 의해서, 신전의 입구의 문턱은 흔들리고, 신전은 연기에 채워진 (「이자야서」 ) 그들은 항상 신만 자리의 주위를 비상하고, 산크트스를 주창하고 있다고 말한다. 낡은 시대에는 그들의 모습은 얼굴의 주위를 날개를 가려지고, 그 날개의 날개의 한 장 한 장에 공작 같은 눈이 묘인지 있었다.
그들치천사의 지휘관에 대해서는 제설있어, 우리엘 (Uriert) , 메타트론 (Metatron) 혹은 satan (Satan타천하기 이전의) , 켐엘 (Kemuel) , 나타나엘 (Nathanael) , 가브리엘 (Gabriel) 등 이라고 여겨진다.

지천사 케르빔 Cherudim
어원인Cherub는 헤브루어로 「지식」또는 「중재하는 사람」라고 말하는 의미가 있다
매우 오래된 존재로, 압사 리어에서는 사원과 신전의 입구를 지키는 만명의 역할을 땅, 이집트에서는 밤하늘, 종교의 근행을 의미하고, 성서에서는 에덴의 원의 동쪽문에서”빼앗는 방향로 향하는 불길의 검= 번개” 를 무기로서 호위역을 맡으면 된다. 케르빔의 모습도 당초는 이형이었다. 4장의 날개를 땅, 팔, 얼굴은 4 개. 빛빛나는 그 발 밑에는 차바퀴가 있다고 말한다. 이 차바퀴는 태양의 운행과 관계를 가지고, 또 신의 어전을 운이다, 신의 전차를 거는 역할을 가지고 있었다고 생각된다. 덧붙여서 이 군단의 지휘관 자피엘 (Jophiel) 고 여겨진다.
「· · · · · 북쪽에서 격렬한 바람이 구름을 일으키고, 불을 발하고, 주위에 빛을 발하기 라든지 불어 오는 이 아닐까. 그 중, 즉 그 날의 (안)중에는, 호박색의 빛남의 인이 있었다. 또, 그 중에는, 네개의 생물의 모습이 있었다. 그 모양은 이렇게 되어 있었다. 그들은 인간 모양인 것이었다. 각자가 네개의 얼굴을 땅, 네개의 날개를 가지고 있었다. 다리는 똑바로, 다리의 뒤는 송아지의 다리의 뒤에 닮아 내리고, 닦은 청동이 빛나는 것같게 빛을 발하고 있었다. 또, 날개의 밑에는 네개의 방향에 인간의 손이 있었다. 네개와도, 각각의 얼굴과 날개를 가지고 있었다. 날개는 서로 서로 접하고 있었다. 그것들은 이동하면 방향을 바꾸지 않고, 각자 얼굴이 향하고 있는 방향으로 나아갔다. 그 얼굴은 인간의 얼굴 은 얼굴과 , 오른쪽에 사자의 얼굴, 왼쪽에 소의 얼굴, 그리고 뒤에는 독수리의 얼굴을 가지고 있었다. · · · · · · 그들의 모양은 타는 숯불이 빛나도록 이고, 송명의 빛나도록 생물의 사이를 둘러싸고 있었다. 불은 빛 빛남, 불로부터 번개가 나오고 있었다」 (「에제키엘서」 )

좌천사 제안님 Ofanim
” 신의 왕좌를 옮기는 존엄과 정의의 천사” 또는 ” 사고의 지배자” (Lords Of will) 고 여겨진다. 별명트로운즈 (Thrones) 혹은 가르가린 (Galgalim= 차바퀴, 눈동자) . 이 차바퀴란 초록기둥색에 빛남, 혹은 불길과 타고, 많은 눈을 가지고 있으면 된다. 그런 이유로(에서)”화차 가 그들의 심볼로 여겨진다. 신의 옥좌를 옮기는 역할을 가지며 지천사의 자리천사를 혼합하고 있는 것 같다. 정리해 생각해 보면「· · · · · · 생물 (저자주:지천사케르빔의 일것) 옆에 땅에 한개의 차바퀴가 보였다. 그것들의 차바퀴의 모양과 구조는, 록주석 같게 빛나고 있어, 네개와도 같은 모습을 해 」 「케르빔이 이동할 때, 차바퀴도 그 옆을 나아가고, · · · · · 케르빔이 오르면, 그 차바퀴도 공히 올랐다. 생물의 영혼이 그 중에 따뜻한들 이다」 (「에제키엘 서」 )
이 기술을 액면대로이게 받으면 자리천사트로운즈란과는 케르빔에 첨부따르는 차바퀴와 우대신이란 생각도 없지는 않다. 어느 쪽이든, 이 상급삼대는 위쪽에 쓰인것과 같게 ”케르빔, 세라핌, 제안님"과 나란히 되어 표현되는 것이 많다.
후훈의 신학자들은 이 혼란을 피하기 위해서(때문에), 케르빔은 관공서상의 신의 왕좌를 옮기는 의 이고, 제안님은 전차등 실천상의 역할을 완수한 것이라고 말한다.
좌천사 트로운즈의 지휘관은 자프켈 (Japhkiel) 혹은 러프엘 (Raphael) 이라고고 여겨진다.

주천사 도미니온즈 Dominions
도미니온즈는 영어로 통치, 지배를 의미하는 (Domintion) 것이고, 주최 (Loadship) 라고도 말한다. 그들 도미니온즈의 역할은 신에 의한 진정한 통치를 열망하는 것에 있다고 말한다. 즉, 신의 말을 흉내우주에 지들 조이기 때문 에 활동을 한다는 것이다. 신의 위광을 나타내는 것처럼, 그 심볼은 . 이 부대의 지휘관은 " 불길을 발하는 천사” 라고 불리우는 하슈말 (Hashmal), 혹은 자드키엘 (Zadkiel)이라고 고 여겨진다.

력천사 버츄즈 Virtues
” 고결” 을 의미하는 힘천사 버츄즈는 헤브루에서는 마라킴 (Mala-kim) 또는 타르시시슴 (Talshishism) 라는 이름으로 알려져 있었다. 그들의 것은 은총과 용기를 사람에게 하사하기 위해서 「지상의 기적」을 주관하는 것을 오로지의 임무로 알고 있다 따라서 영웅을 격려하거나, 선을 하는 것들의 앞에 출현하고, 그 위력 을 보인다고 말한다. 예수노보루하늘시에 출현하고, 카인의 탄생시에 산파의 역할도 하고있다.
력천사 버츄즈의 지휘관은 미카엘 (Michael) , 라파엘 (Raphael) , 바비엘 (Barbiel) , 우지엘 (Uzziel) , 페리엘 (Periel)이라고 여겨지고 있다.

능천사 파워스 Powes
신에 의해 최초에 만들어졌다고 되는 능천사 파워스는, 그 임무도 매우 지나치게 가혹한 것이다. 그들은 지옥에 떨어뜨려진 천사, 즉 타천사인 악마의 군세의 최전선에 진지하고, 저항하는 역할을 가지고, 항상 전투 체제로 있다고 말한다. 따라서, 악의 유혹에 몸을 노출되고 있는 것으로부터, 이 계급의 천사들에는 타천사가 되는 케이스도 적지 않고, 실제, 그들 능천사 사이로부터 최대의 배반자 낸 것이라고 말한다. 지휘관인 카마엘 (Camael) 자신도 타천사라고 말하는 견해도 있다. 카마엘의 이름이 가지는 의미는 「신을 보는 것」이지만, 114 만 4 천명의 부하를 껴안아 「파괴의 천사」 「징벌의 천사」라고 불린다.

 

 

권천사 프린시펄리티즈 Principalities
애초에 지상의 국가나 대도시를 맡겨진 계급은 프린스담이라고 되어 있다. 이윽고 이들의 경계가 넓혀졌지만 그 때 경계선이 매우 애매한 것이 되었다. 권천사는 자신들의 영토를 넓히고 신앙의 옹호자가 되어 약간 완고한 정통적인 선악관을 지니는 경향이 있다. 권천사의 군주 중에 니슬로크가 있다는 사실을 덧붙여 놓지 않으면 안된다. 니슬로크는 본래 앗시리아의 신으로 적어도 오컬트 문헌에서는 지옥의 데몬왕의 주방장이라고 여겨지고 있다. 권천사의 군주로 납득이 갈만한 후보자는 아나엘이다.

아나엘은 제2천의 장관이기도 하고 달을 감쌀 정도로 넓혀지는 주천사와 함께 지상의 모든 왕국과 지도자를 관리하는 역할을 맡고 있다. 또 한명의 군주는 하미엘로 에녹을 하늘로 운반했다고 전해지지만 그것보다도 갈데아의 신 이슈타르로서 잘 알려져 있다. 위대한 군주 케르윌은 골리앗을 죽이고자 하는 다윗의 계획을 도와주었다고 한다.


대천사 아크엔젤즈 Archangels
대부분의 사람들이 적어도 2,3명의 대천사의 이름을 들 수 있을 것이다. 모든 천사 중에서 대천사가 가장 명성을 높이고 있는 것도 당연할 것이다. '묵시록'에서 신의 앞에 서는 7명의 천사는 통상 대천사라고 해석된다. 이슬람교의 '코란'은 4명의 대천사를 인정하고 그 중 2명의 이름 지브릴(가브리엘)과 미카르(미카엘)를 들고 있는 것에 불구하다. 기독교와 유대교의 문헌은 7이라는 수에서는 의견을 일치시키고 있으면서도 실제로 대천사가 누구인지에 대해서는 격렬한 논쟁이 계속되고 있다. 그러나 4명의 이름, 미카엘, 가브리엘, 라파엘, 우리엘은 항상 나타난다. 다른 3명의 후보자는 전통적으로 메타트론, 레미엘, 아나엘, 라그엘, 라지엘 중에서 선택된다.

디오뉴시오스에 의하면 대천사는 '신의 뜻을 전하는 사자'라고 한다. 신과 인간을 중개하는 가장 중요한 중재자라고 여겨져 어둠의 자식들과의 끊임없는 싸움으로 하늘의 군세를 이끌고 있는 것이 대천사이다.


천사 엔젤즈 Angels

이것이 천사의 계급의 최후로 가장 인간에 가깝다. 엔젤을 나타내는 히브리어는 마라크로 이는 '사자'를 의미한다. 산스크리스트어로는 앙게레스(역자주 : 힌두교의 반신반인의 성선 리스)로 이 신의 영 혹은 하늘의 영이 페르시아어로 '밀사'를 의미하는 앙가로스가 되어 그리스에서는 앙게로스로서 나타난다. 이와 같은 경로로 전능의 신과 인간, 영원과 시간우주 사이를 중재하는 자라는 현대의 천사의 개념에 드디어 도달하게 된다.
이미 살펴본 바와 같이 천사의 이름과 관련된 초기의 최대 근거는 히브리의 선조 에녹의 3종의 연대기이다. 위전이라고 언명되었다고 해도 '에녹서'는 천사에 관련된 세부사항의 보고(寶庫)이기 때문에 천사에 대한 흥미가 정점을 이루었던 13세기에는 에녹을 위시한 수많은 위전의 저작이 유행했었다(완전한 형태의 '에녹서'는 18세기에 이디오피아 교회에 보존되어 있는 원본이 발견될 때까지 실제로는 사람 눈에 띄는 일이 없었다고 한다). 중세에는 에녹이 비교적 적게 잡은 수백의 천사가 카발리스트의 언어를 믿는다면 301655722명에까지 늘어나고 있다.

Azazel

 

In Enoch I, Azazel is one of the chiefs of the 200 fallen angels (Revelation speaks of one-third of the heavenly host being involved in the fall).  Azazel "taught men to fashion swords and shields" while women learned from him "finery and the art of beautifying the eyelids."  He is the scapegoat in rabbinic literature, Targum, and in Leviticus 16:8, although in the latter he is not actually named.  In The Zohar (Vayeze 153a) the rider on the serpent is symbolized by "the evil Azazel."  Here he is said to be chief of the order of bene elim (otherwise ischim, lower angels, "men-spirits").  Irenaeus calls Azazel "that fallen and yet mighty angel."  In The Apocalypse of Abraham he is "lord of hell, seducer of mankind," and here his aspect, when revealed in its true form, shows him to be a demon with 7 serpent heads, 14 faces, and 12 wings.  Jewish legend speaks of Azazel as the angel who refused to bow down before Adam (in the Koran the angel is Eblis or Iblis) when the 1st human was presented to God to the assembled hierarchs in Heaven.  For such refusal, Azazel was thenceforth dubbed "the accursed Satan." [Rf. Bamberger, Fallen Angels, p278]  According to the legend in Islamic lore, when God commanded the angels to worship Adam, Azazel refused, contending "Why should a son of fire [i.e. an angel] fall down before a son of clay [i.e. a mortal]?"  Whereupon God cast Azazel out of Heaven and changed his name to Eblis.  Milton in Paradise Lost I, 534 describes Azazel as "cherub tall," but also as a fallen angel and Satan's standard bearer.  Originally, according to Maurice Bouisson in Magic; Its History and Principal Rites, Azazel was an ancient Semitic god of the flocks who was later degraded to the level of a demon. [Rf Trevor Ling, The Significance of Satan in New Testament Demonology.]  Bamberger in Fallen Angels inclines to the notion that the first star which fell (star here having the meaning of angel) was Azazel.

 

A demon of the second order, guardian of the goat.  At the feast of expiation, which the Jews celebrate on the 10th day of the 7th month, two goats are led to the High Priest, who draws lots for them, the one for the Lord, the other for Azazel.  The one on which the lot of the Lord fell was sacrificed, and his blood served for expiation.  The High Priest then put his two hands on the head of the other, confessed his sins and those of the people, charged the animal with them, and allowed him to be led to the desert and set free.  And the people, having left the care of their iniquities to the goat of Azazel - also known as the scape-goat - return home with clean consciences.  According to Milton, Azazel is the principal standard-bearer of the infernal armies.  It is also the name of the demon used by Mark the heretic for his magic spells.

Angels Of The Seven Heavens

First Heaven (Shamayim)
The lowest heaven, Shamayim borders the Earth and is ruled by Gabriel. It contains the clouds, the winds, the Upper Waters, and is home to the two hundred astronomer-angels who preside over the stars.

Second Heaven (Raquia)
Raquia is ruled by the angels Zachariel and Raphael, and, according to Enoch, it is within this heaven that the fallen angels are imprisoned waiting final judgment in complete darkness.

Third Heaven (Shehaqim)
According to Enoch, hell lies within the northern boundaries of the third heaven. Sagun is ruled over by Anahel and three subordinate saraim: Jagniel, Rabacyel, and Dalquiel, and is the residence for Izra'il, the Islamic angel of death. It is here that the wicked are tortured by angels. In the southern regions, however, there exists a bountiful paradise, thought to be the Garden of Eden, where the souls of the righteous will come after death.

Fourth Heaven (Machanon)
Ruled by Michael, the fourth heaven, "Is the site of the heavenly Jerusalem, the holy Temple and its Altar" (Godwin, p. 122). It is here that, according to Enoch, that the Garden of Eden is actually housed, not in the third heaven.

Fifth Heaven (Mathey)
Machon is home to God, Aaron, and the avenging angels. The northern boundaries are said to be ruled by Sandalphon. It is also home to the fallen Grigori (watchers). In the southern regions, on the other hand, reside the ministering angels who endlessly change the praises of the Lord.

Sixth Heaven (Zebul)
The sixth heaven is ruled by Zebul,(by day), and Sabath,(by night). This stormy, snow ridden dwelling is home to the seven phoenixes and the seven cherubim who sing the praises of God. A multitude of other angelic beings also reside here who study an array of subjects including astronomy, ecology, the seasons, and mankind.

Seventh Heaven (Araboth)
The holiest of heavens. Araboth is ruled by Cassiel and is home to God on his Divine Throne. It is also home to the highest orders of angels--the seraphim, cherubim, and thrones.

The Seventh Heaven is the abode of human souls waiting to be born. It is also the seat of God; of Zagzagel, prince of the Torah; and the dwelling place of the seraphim, hayyoth, etc. It is in the 7th Heaven that Isaiah has a glimpse of God and the Christ and "hears the Most high dictating the program on his (Christs) earthly manifestation and return."

In Enoch 2,8, the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life are both found in the 3rd Heaven. The Zohar mentions 390 Heavens and 70,000 worlds. The gnostic Basilides vouched for 365 Heavens; Jellenek (in Beth Ha-Midrasch) recalls a legend which tells of 955 Heavens. In Enoch 2 the Heavens number 10. Here the 8th Heaven is called Muzaloth. The 9th Heaven, home of the 12 signs of the zodiac, is called Kukhavim. The 10th, where Enoch saw the "vision of the face of the Lord", is called Aravoth (Hebrew term for the 12 signs of the Zodiac). The confusion of the Heavens is clear here from the fact that the signs of the zodiac do not lodge in the Heavens named after them.

The notion of the 7 Heavens appears in The Testament Of The Twelve Patriarchs and other Jewish apocrypha, and was familiar to the ancient Persians and Babylonians. The Persians pictured the Almighty in the highest of the 7 Heavens, "seated on a great white throne, surrounded by winged cherubim." The Koran also speaks of 7 Heavens.

Azael(Whom God Strengthens) Mentioned as one of 2 angels, the other being Ouza(Aza) who came down from Heaven and was corrupted. Cohabited with Naamah, Lamech's daughter, and sired the sedim, Assyrian guardian spirits. Azael, it is reported, is chained in a desert where he will remain until the day of judgment. Cornelius Agrippa, in his Occult Philosophy, lists 4 evil angels as the opposites of the 4 holy rulers of the elements; among the evil ones Azael is included. Schwab in his Vocabulaire de l'Angelologie identifies Shamhazai (semyaza) with Azael (Aziel), guardian of hidden treasures.

Azrael The Angel of Death who is "forever writing in a large book and forever erasing what he writes: what he writes is the birth of man, what he erases is the name of the man at death." In Falasha lore it is Suriel. The Arabic angel is Azrael.

Jewish lore says this angel is Rahab, who, lore goes on to say, was destroyed by God for refusing to part the waters of the red sea. The new angel of death then became Yama (Malach ha-Mavet).

The Talmud says the angel of death was equated with Satan, and thus became the legend that the angel of death was evil, rather than the good angel he is.

Azrael, also known as Izra'il, one of the four Archangels of Islam (Mikhail, Djibril, and Israfil), is pictured as having gigantic proportions: one foot rests in either the forth or the seventh heaven, while the other is on the bridge between hell and paradise. Supposedly Azrael brought God a handful of earth from which to create Adam and therefore earned his title as the Angel of Death. Izra'il keeps a roll of humanity, on which the names of the damned are circle in black and the names of the blessed, in light. When a person's day of death approaches, a leaf with the person's name on it falls from the tree beneath God's throne. After forty days have passed, Izra'il must sever the individual's soul from his or her body. Azrael will be the last to die, but will do so at the second trump of the Archangel. He is the angel who accompanies your soul to Heaven.

The phrase 'the Wings of Azrael' refers to the approach of death; the signs of death coming on the dying.

이번은 은근히 충격적이라 진정 좀 한 뒤 감상문을 올릴 생각이다.

 

듀안의 광기랄까...뭐랄까...

그는 마치 기형이 되고싶어 미친 사람같았다.

하긴 그럴 수 밖에 없는 상황이었다, 이번 편에서는.

 

아직도 듀안의 광기 찬 웃음소리가 귓가에서 떠나질 않는다.

[ Liberty School ] 토막글

 

 

타박타박-

무심하게 걷던 인물은 한 건물 앞에서 걸음을 멈추었다. 제 자신의 위치와 약도에 표시된 곳을 몇 번이고 확인해본다. 찾고있던 그곳이 맞지싶다. 약도를 주머니에 우겨넣는다. 주변을 탐색하듯이 둘러본다. 깔끔한 형태의 건물은 꽤나 크다. 건물 뒤엔 산이 버티고 있다. 무슨 생각으로 산 앞에 학교를 세운걸까 싶은 생각이 들기도한다. 그래도 꽤 괜찮아보였는지 알듯말듯한 표정을 짓는다. 그 표정은 미소 짓는 것 같기도 하다.

 

Liberty School.

 

건물의 이름을 입안으로 굴려본다. 어감이 좋다. 하지만 이름만큼 너무 자유분방만 학교만 아니라면 좋을텐데. 들고있던 가방을 고쳐멘다. 그는 무언의 새로움을 기대하며 발걸음을 옮겼다.

B급 호러영화의 걸작이라고 불리는 영화다.

말하자면, '샴쌍둥이의 운명'이라는 소재를 가진 컬트 호러무비.

 

샴쌍둥이인 형 베리얼과 동생인 듀안이, 자신들을 (수술로) 강제로 떨어뜨려놓은

의사들을 한 명씩 찾아내어 살해한다는 내용이다.

 

1982년에 만들어진 영화치곤 꽤 괜찮다.

현대의 호러무비팬들이 보면 이 영화의 특수효과가 얼마나 형편없고, 내용또한 얼마나 재미없고,

스톱모션을 이용한 베리얼의 움직임이 얼마나 어색한지에 대해 따질 것이다.

그러니까 그러한 성향을 지닌, 영화의 공포와 재미만을 추구하는 호러무비 팬들에게는 비추천한다.

그들은 이 영화를 통해 감독이 무엇을 말하고 있는지조차 모르니까.

 

[ 샴쌍둥이이자 기형으로 태어난 형 베리얼 ]

 

바스켓케이스에 등장하는 베리얼은 상당히 기괴한 모습이다.

사람을 우그러뜨린뒤 녹여만든 듯한 모습을 하고 있다.

몸체에 그나마 붙어있는 팔마저 비정상적이다.

 

베리얼과 듀안, 그들 형제는 태어날 때부터 샴쌍둥이로 태어나 함께 자라났다.

베리얼의 그 인간같지 않은 모습을 혐오한 부친이 둘을 수술로 떼내버린다.

형제는 텔레파시로 소통할 수 있었기에 비닐봉지에 넣어져 버려진 베리얼을 듀안이 찾아낸다.

생명력이 강한 베리얼은 죽지않고 계속 살아있었다.

베리얼은 그 날밤 아버지를 살해하고, 그 후 형제는 숙모의 손에서 자란다.

숙모가 사망하자 자신들을 떨어뜨린 의사들에게 복수하기 위해 뉴욕으로 오게된다.

듀안과 베리얼은 수술을 집도한 의사 세명을 찾아내어 마침내 복수를 하지만,

듀안에게 여자친구가 생기며 그들은 파국을 맞이한다.

베리얼이 질투심에 듀안몰래 호텔방을 나와 그의 여자친구를 살해한 것.

 

이 영화는 호러영화의 특성을 가지고 있지만, 사실 감독인 헤넌로터의 현대를 바탕으로한

우화이자 저예산 독립영화다.

그로테스크하다기보단 코믹한 베리얼의 기형적인 모습과 기형이 아니지만,

그렇다고 일반인에 속하지도 않는 듀안의 모습에서 비정상과 정상의 불확실함을 통해

호러영화의 본질에 대해서 질문한다고 볼 수 있다.

호러영화의 특성이 다 그렇듯 '정상적인 인물'이 '공포'가 되지않는다.

호러영화에 등장하는 인물들에게 공포를 주는 것은 '일반인의 모습'내지는 '그로테스크한 모습'을

가진, 어딘가 한 부분이 비틀린 '비정상적인 인물'이 '공포'가 된다.

'공포영화'란 것 자체에서는 정상과 비정상을 확실하게 나누고 구분시킨다.

바스켓 케이스는 그 경계를 모호하게 설정해놓음으로서 그것에 대해 생각할 수 있게 해준다.

이것은 2편과 3편에 가서 더욱더 확실해진다.

 

이 영화에서 듀안을 질투한 베리얼이 그의 여자친구를 죽이고

필사적으로 성행위를 하려는 모습에서 왠지모를 측은함이 느껴졌다.

기형적인 모습에 남아있는 거라고는 얼굴과 두 팔뿐이니 그걸 할 수 있을리가 없으니까.

자신이 그렇게 태어나고싶어서 태어난 것도 아닌데 친자식인 베리얼의 기형적임을

아버지가 극도로 혐오한다는 점도 그를 불쌍하게 보이도록 만든다.

 

베리얼의 모습이 보통 샴쌍둥이들의 모습과 다르게 극단적이지만,

감독은 그 극단적임을 십분활용하여 자신이 말하고싶은 것을 말하고있다.

 

이 영화가 왜 B급 영화의 걸작이라고 불리는지 충분히 이해할 수 있었다.

물론 이 영화에서 어떤 점을 보느냐에 따라 평이 갈린다.

하지만, 영화 밑바탕에 깔려있는 감독의 의도를 이해하지 못한채 영화를

평한다는 것은 무지하다고 볼 수 밖에 없다.

 

이 영화를 평가하려거든, 감독의 의도를 완전히 이해한 채 평가해주었으면한다.

 

* ) 이 영화를 국내에서 구하기가 어려워서 외국 토런트 사이트에서 다운 받아 보았다.

왜인진 모르겠지만 현대의 외국 영화들과는 달리 영어가 귀에 안들어와서 내용이해하는데

애 좀 먹었다. 생각해보면 스피커 상태가 안좋은 걸수도(..)
